Installation,
Care , and Maintenance
Please be sure to carefully read the instructions included
with your Windvest. Periodically check all fasteners
to be sure they are secure. The angle your Windvest
sits at is crucial. There is a "sweet spot"
where it will be most effective. Even an inch of movement
either way away from this can cause excessive turbulence
resulting in fluttering glasses and little or no windshield
effect. Play with the angle, test, and retest until
you find the angle that gives you the best performance.
Riser mounted shields will
automatically sit at the correct angle in most cases.
DO NOT ADJUST YOUR WINDVEST WHILE RIDING DOWN THE FREEWAY!!!!
You could lose control of your
bike!
The
height of your Windvest is adjustable. A good way to
tell if your Windvest needs adjustment is to ride along
at about 50 mph and hold your hand in front of you.
There should be no wind hitting your hand until it goes
over your head level. If you feel the wind hitting your
forehead, try adjusting the shield upward an inch at
a time. The 14" versions can be adjusted up and
down 1 inch, while the 16" version is capable of
2" of adjustment. If this is not enough for you,
you may be able to swap the support crossbar for a higher
version. (Call us for details on that one). Some bikes
do not allow adjustment due to accessories such as headlight
enclosures, turn signals and things like that. To adjust
the height, remove the front plates on the face of the
shield and move the shield to the desired location.
It may be necessary to depress the bottom center of
the shield to line up the mounting holes. Tighten front
plate screws to approximately 60 inch pounds (DON'T
crank them down as hard as you can). Our 10-1045 and
10-1245 models require you to leave all screws loose,
but started, before tightening all of them. You may
have to loosen the front plate screws in order to start
the other screws. When finished, be sure to double check
that all screws are secure before riding.
When cared
for properly, your Windvest will give you many years
of trouble free service. The most common mistake people
make is trying to scrub bugs off the windshield. When
a bug dies on your shield it sometimes leaves a sticky
residue which acts like a dirt magnet. You don't want
to rub that dirt in, as it can scratch the surface of
the shield. Instead, before you wash your bike, lay
a wet towel on the Windvest and let it sit while you
wash the rest of the bike. After the wet towel has had
a chance to loosen the bug guts off the shield, remove
the towel and hose the bugs off rather than rubbing
them off. If any chunks remain, gently remove them with
a soft terrycloth towel, turning frequently. If soap
is needed, we recommend ordinary dish soap. It's inexpensive,
and everyone, well, almost everyone, has it. While chemical
products such as Windex and RainX are safe to use, we
do not recommend them. They are costly and won't help.
In fact, RainX will cause the rain to slide up the Windvest
and over the top rather than the sides, putting more
wetness in your face. Using products like Windex does
not remove the grit first, and will probably end up
scratching the shield. If you should scratch the shield,
all isn't lost. There are plastic polishing products
available in your local auto parts store, or through
us. Both Novus (#2) and Meguire's (#10) are excellent
at removing fine scratches. Heavy scratches may require
buffing, which can be done at your local plastic shop.
(Look under "Plastics - Fabricators" in your
yellow pages.) If you have any further questions, please

Now get out there and RIDE!
